I have had a prescription drug addiction in the past, and the side effects are terrible - depression, suicidal thoughts, etc. If the doctors have cut him off for this medication, the side effects are the reasons. The pain from his herniated disc must be terrible, but equally as terrible is his addiction now. Even after the surgery, he still will have to go off the pills some time. Make sure that he does not do this cold turkey!!! He must see a doctor who will be able to wean him from this medication slowly so that there are no side effects from getting off them. Addictions to prescription drugs are common and extremely devastating, to the patient, and also to the family.
