I had a cracked tooth that broke off about a month ago and the pulp was exposed. This tooth was the second one down from the back right side of my bottom mouth. No wisdom teeth has sprouted.
I seen a dentist last week and he cleaned out the death tissue. Before this point I did not have any type of pain except for sensitivity which lingers maximum less than 30 seconds.
The dentist wanted to use a root canal as a last resort. So basically he did a filling. He told me he wanted to do two fillings. The first filling will last a month that allows air within the tooth. And then he would do a second filling that is better in quality.
Everything was fine until the next few days. I started to get a toothache on that tooth with real massive pain. It started out small then it got more painful up to 8 on a scale of 1-10 ; 10 being the most painful. When I wiggle the tooth, it would also be painful. That was not the case before the filling or even after before the pain started to kick in. In the mornings it would not be painful but as the day went on the pain would be unbearable.
I ate some cookies the night before the pain started to kick in.
I have tried various things to help with the pain:
800mg of ibuorofen
applied benzocaine
rinsing with warm water and salt water.
drinking alcohol
But after five days since the filling, I got the feeling that the pain subsided.. But there is still pain when i wiggle the tooth and i still needed to take pain medicine 800mg of ibuprofen.
On the sixth morning after the filling, The pain when i wiggled was almost gone. Although there was some kind of ache but it was very low. It could've been the ibuprofen still in affect that i took the night before i went to bed. But, I felt like i could brush my teeth normally unlike the previous days where i had to be extra cautious and not bump into it.
I had made an emergency appointment with the dentist in the peak of the pain around 4 days after the initial filling.
On the seventh day, i seen the dentist on my emergency visit. I told him about how the pain was going away. I thought the dentist would take a look at it and do some x-rays to see if it was safe to proceed with the initial treatment and do nothing at this point. However, he decided to change the treatment to which i believe he told me was a root canal. The dentist did not have much time so he was unable to complete the root canal. And since my tooth had two canals, I believe he was only able to have time to do one canal. Because afterwards he did a x-ray on that tooth to confirm if i had two canals but filled the cavity and send me home.
After the novacaine wore off, I was in extreme pain! way worse than i had before making that emergency visit. I felt like i was back at the peak of the unbearable pain or even more painful.
Now i'm scheduled to see the dentist next week for the dentist to finish. And i was prescribed hydrocodone to help with the pain but it makes me sleepy.
My questions are...
Would i have been better off skipping that emergency visit and dodge that second treatment altogether? Because the pain was subsiding and perhaps the tooth was able to make through the filling.
Should i make an emergency visit at some other clinic tomorrow and have that dentist finish things off?
Or, should i wait it out and keep popping codone until my next scheduled visit at my current dentist?
Could the cookies i ate have been the reason i was in soo much pain?
Thanks for your advice in advance.
I know this is quite long so I am real appreciative for anyone who reads.
