Hi, ekf522.
I also had severe pain in my jaw area after a filling as well as EXTREME sensitivity to cold (heat, as well, but I seemed to notice it more with the cold) and ended up on vicodin before I found any relief from the pain.
It turned out that I had a tooth that was 'dying' and ended up needing a root canal to take care of it (the root canal was painless, both during and afterwards and the pain I'd been experiencing stopped immediately...).
This isn't to say that this is what's happening with you, too, but it's absolutely possible. I think prdent1 is right; I think you need a dentist to check it out (be adamant about having them check for the need for a root canal; my dentist insisted that I had TMD and would not check; it wasn't until I finally got a second opinion that I found relief) and it's great that you already have an appointment.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out!
