Q: Oxycontin and pain management medications
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 7th, 2009
I have tried so many medications to try to stop these migraines, including topomax. Nothing seems to work, accept one Medication. I got a migraine this summer and had no Maxalt "which doesn't work anyway" so my grandma gave me an Oxycontin. This took away the pain and kept it away, i had some dizziness and nausea, but that is manageable compared to what i am used to. So this is like a miracle to me, hope at last. I have been trying to get a doctor to prescribe it to me with no luck, they all say they don't like to prescribe this drug. My migraines have taken over my life, i can't work enough to pay my bills, I can't keep seeing doctors cause i can't afford it. Knowing that there is a drug out there that works for me but doctors won't give it to me, makes me sick to my stomach! So my question is where and how can I get this amazing medication? I need help cause i am losing hope and fear that i will never lead a normal life again.

Current medical status: I have chronic migraine headaches. I get them about 2 to 3 times a week on average. I have been hospitalized a few time because the pain and agony was to strong to handle. The Migraine is accompanied by horrible horrible pain, sweats, shakes, puking, and horrible hallucinations, blind spots, tunnel vision, and pain from light.

Oxycontin (generic name: oxycodone hydrochloride) is an analgesic of the opioid group. It has a similar mechanism of action as morphine and can be a subject of drug abuse and addiction. This explains why the doctors do not want to prescribe the oxycontin. You might want to visit a doctor who is more familiar with pain management and can suggest other medications that might be both effective and not a cause for addiction.
