Q: Ovulation and the axis hypothalamus - pituitary - ovaries
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 4th, 2008
I went off pill 3 months ago. Had a light period last month that was late and shorter than normal. I took a pregnancy test and turned up negative. Have had cramping and pain in right side above hip or by hip. Noticed sticky brown discharge used tampon thought might be getting period 5 days early. Now gone and all that was on tampon was dark brown and very little. Still have cramps today and not the normal tell tale signs that I usually get prior to starting. Unsure and want to make sure nothing is wrong......

Absence of regular periods or having irregular bleeding is an expected temporary side effect after discontinuance of the birth control pills. The body needs time (several months) to establish the normal function of the axis hypothalamus-pituitary-ovaries. When regular ovulations are established periods will also become regular.
