My husband had a very bad stroke 4 years ago. At first he didn't eat much at all. But the past couple of years it's like he would never stop eating if I didn't stop him. He has pretty bad aphasia, so I can't get much information out of him, but I suspected today that he can't taste or smell things, and when I asked him he said he couldn't! I asked him why he wants to eat all the time and so much then? All he can say is, "I don't know." Does it make any sense that he can't taste but wants to eat all the time anyway? He has almost no pleasures left in life, can't do much of anything, and about the only thing he loves is eating, so I hate to deprive him, but I can't let him get fat again. Could his insatiable appetite be caused by brain damage? And are the parts of the brain that control hunger and taste close to each other? I was told most of his damage was to the thalamus and basal ganglia. The CT report said that the bleeding was in both lateral ventricles, but mainly left anterior and occipital. Thank you.
