I'm a 56year old female, post menopausal. I've known that I've had an ovarian cyst since 1994. In the original mri it measured 2.3 cm. I had an additional mri in 2001 in which it measured 2.5cm. My most recent was 5/2009 pelvic ctscan and it measured 2.6cm. My primary doctor is in panic mode about this (she was unaware that I even had one). Does it stand to reason that something I've had since before 1994 is cause for alarm? I'm scheduled for a CA125 next week and am wondering if it comes out negative, since I've had it so long...should it be of real concern. Also, is growth of .3cms in 15 years cause for concern?
Thank You

Most benign ovarian cysts will resolve within a few years of passing through menopause (unless the patient is taking hormone replacement therapy). While the presence of an ovarian cyst in a 56 year-old woman does not necessarily mean that she has an ovarian tumor or ovarian cancer, it must be worked-up to exclude these diagnoses.

If the CA-125 level is significantly elevated, then this would be cause for some concern regarding the possibility of ovarian cancer. On the other hand, a normal CA-125 level does not rule-out the possibility of ovarian cancer.

You should probably be seen by a gynecologist who is experienced in managing ovarian lesions in postmenopausal women.
