I have both Idiopathic Hypersomnia and Schizoaffective Disorder. I currently take Adderall IR 15 mg twice a day, but my psychiatrist is thinking of discontinuing it. I am also taking Nuvigil 250 mg on top of it. My sleep doctor that prescribes the Nuvigil also wants to take me off Adderall.
My sleep doctor said if the Nuvigil did not help my tiredness (and it hasn't), that he would try things "that insurance companies don't like". I don't understand what that could be. The only options I'm seeing are the amphetamines or Provigil/Nuvigil. What other options for Idiopathic Hypersomnia are left?
Welcome to the ehealthforum and I am glad to help you out.
Idiopathic hypersomnia is sleeping too much (hypersomnia) without an obvious cause. It is usually treated with stimulant medications such as amphetamine, methylphenidate, and modafinil. Your doctor may try to use methylphenidate. Methylphenidate has high potential for abuse due to its pharmacological similarity to cocaine and amphetamines.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care.
