People with a significant amount of bones density between 25-35 years of age lose less bone mass over time, as there is more reserve bone to draw from.  However, there are some demographics of people who are more likely to develop osteoporosis than others.  These include people who are or have experienced:

  • A family history of osteoporosis through their siblings or parents
  • Chemotherapy or aromatase inhibitors treatment
  • Diagnosed with anorexia nervosa or bulimia
  • Excessive drinkers
  • Sedentary lifestyles, especially during childhood
  • Smokers
  • Sufferers of depression, or those who take SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
  • Take certain types of medications
  • Thin body frames
  • White and Southeastern Asian women

If you have osteoporosis, you may not know that you have it.  This 'silent disease' often has few symptoms. However, there are some symptoms that you learn to identify early on.  To learn more about symptoms of osteoporosis, read the next section on Osteoporosis Symptoms for information.
