Back story: A year or so ago I messed up my patch cycle when a patch fell off thus i had to apply a new patch. So now I have to use two patches from one prescription, then have to take my third patch from my new prescription each month. The system works fine and nothing gets messed up, I just have to remember to get my prescription for my third patch each month.

Problem: So, as normal, I went to get my prescription because it was patch change day for patch number 3. Apparently my prescription expired. I called the doctor and told them I needed it to day. Long story short I couldn't get it. This was on a Tuesday (patch change day). I kept the patch on tell Wednessday hoping that I could get the patch then. I read in the ortho evra direction that there is a 48 hour window where your safe if something happens with your patch change. So i figured this would be okay to do. Well, then i still could not get the patch due to the doctor not getting back to me and such. With out any other ideas I decided to take off the patch and just start my period a week early.

Normally I take my patch of on Tuesday, have some small spotting on Friday evening, then start my period Saturday morning/daytime. Well, after taking of my patch that Wednessday i had spotting that night. I was somewhat concerned with this considering the normal start of my periods and that fact that it was a week early. My period then did not start tell Sunday, which made sense given i took the patch of wednessday.

I was unsure of when to continue the cycle of patches. I received my new prescription and put the patch on on the usually patch changing Tuesday following the start of my (week early) period.

So my question(s) are:
First, was the early spotting okay or should i be concerned?
Secondly, was it okay to start my new patch cycle after the period?
And Last, is it safe to have unprotected sex after waiting a week after my period to end to avoid any possible ovulation and allow the Ortho Evra to kick in?

1. It was likely just withdrawal spotting, so perfectly ok.

2. Yes.

3. Yes, a week of extra protection is needed.
