Q: Optic Nerve Size (Multiple Sclerosis)

I am 27 years old and I am being tested for multiple sclerosis. I had an incidence of optic neuritis. The opthalmologist said that my optic nerve in the affected eye was measuring 14mm and in the unaffected eye was measuring 2mm. My MRI and spinal tap have come back normal. My evoction testing has not been completed yet. My dad has ms and has had a similar history. I am wondering what the optic nerve size has to do with any of this, if anything? I know that with one neurological symtom, I cannot receive a diagnosis, regardless of my test results. Can the optic nerve enlargement be due to anything else than possible MS? I forgot to ask the neurologist about the implications of my optic nerve measurements and the opthalmologist wasn't very informative...

Thanks!!

When the optic nerve is inflammed the size will be increased.

ON is also associated with Lupus along with other auto-immune diseases.

You could also seek a 2nd opinion.

Best Wishes,

Zig
