Q: OP surgery and menstruation ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 26th, 2009
How much does OP surgery/antibiotics/pain killers affect menstruation and PH level? I've been off YAZ for 3 months and my cycle has always been regular and about 4 days long. I had a normal pap smear 2/25/09.

I had withdrawal intercourse (no back-up) with my husband 2/20 and had my period a day later. 3/5 I had out-patient surgery on a precancerous mole and was prescribed a week's worth of Diocycline 3 times a day (sp?) antibiotics and ultracet (as needed). Got a three-day flu bug a week later and filled up on OTCs.

I had withdrawl sex (no back-up) 3/20 and 3/24. It's 3/26 and no menstrual. My dermatologists' incision on my leg got infected yesterday-now on Mupirocin ointment. Could I be pregnant or could it be the surgery/flu and meds earlier this month still affecting my PH level? how long should I wait to take a test?

I got laid off last month, told by derma. to stop my regular exercise regimen to keep the incision safe, gained weight. No spotting, appetite, or urine changes.

It is not uncommon to miss periods after stopping birth control pills. The body has to reach its previous normal hormonal fluctuations. This might take some time even if the person already had several normal menstrual periods. You might want to visit your gynecologist for laboratory hormone tests.
As for the pregnancy test, waiting until missing the period is about the time needed after intercourse to check for pregnancy. This is usually no less then 14 days after intercourse.
