I believe it is common to have different opinions.

From someone who has had ruptured discs, one surgery, and pain for over 10 years I will give you my take on it.

You should consider many factors in deciding a course of action. First how intense is the pain and do you have foot drop or difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels? If so that is an indication you need immediate surgery.

If not you need to consider if you can control the pain with lifestyle changes, physical therapy, epidurals, chiropractic care? What level of medication does it take for you to function now? How old are you? What are your expectations?

My advise is to not jump into surgery. You can alway go that route later. You can never go back.
