I just need a little information because i can't seem to find any online. I have been on pain medication for the last 5 and a half years for a chronic condition. I have tried to lessen my dose and also try to stop all together. The pain is so much that i can't even get out of bed to get myself up or even dressed or anything. I have to be on the medication to be able to function with the pain but i just found out i am pregnant. This is such a blessing and i am making sure to go by what all the books say about diet and vitamins and all but i still have to take my pain medication. I was just wondering if anyone out there has been through what i am going through now, and if so how was it, what did your doctor say and how you and your baby are? Any information you can offer would be greatly appreciated since I am stressing out and I know that's not good for the baby either, but this is my first one and so of course I have all the worries to go with it.

Narcotic painkillers are very strong, potentially habit-forming medicines used to treat severe pain. They include morphine and codeine. Are you using this type of pain medication?

Pregnant women are advised to avoid all medications, unless the medications are necessary and recommended by a prenatal health care provider. You should discuss all medication use with your provider---have you set up an appointment with an OB-GYN?

No, it isn't either of those medications but it is a narcotic. It hasn't been rated yet on the class of drug and all of the information I have received is that if the mother does need it during pregnancy then it is accepted, but of course as always there are risks involved. I was just wondering if anyone had gone through this type of experience. I know of a couple of other people who had to take narcotics because of course the pain is intolerable without it like in my situation, I just wanted to get a broader perspective. It's not like I can go any other way, but it just helps I think if I inform myself as much as possible and hear others' stories then I don't worry as much even though the risk/threat hasn't diminished. My appointment is this week, which is also scary and exciting. Thank you very much for your response.

Right. Good for you for keeping yourself informed. This might be an interesting question to put to the pregnancy community, but I think that only a small percentage of the population really require pain medication during pregnancy as you do. It will also be interesting to see what your Obstetrician says!

Forgive me for prying ---- Why do you take the pain meds?
