Hi Ya'll--- I have a 10 y.o. daughter that
has been having issues in school this year
and I have noticed it at home more as
well. I took her to the pediatrician and
also had her tested at school and they
both came up with slight ADD and
definately ODD. I don't know much about
ODD and what I have looked up is about
children that hit, curse, throw things,
etc.. She does not do this, instead she
ignores her teacher if she doesn't feel
like doing her work or has already done
similar work and she thinks "I already did
that and doing it again is stupid" or
ignores me about chores etc.., she lies
just to be lying about stupid stuff,
annoys her sister and or others, if you
catch her in a lie she has outrageous
tantrums crying "I'm not lying", she has
sensory issues with how things feel on her
feet and hands, like socks and gloves and
will throw a complete fit if it's not
right. She begged for some fake
pre=painted glue on nails so my oldest put
them on for her this week. She had them on
for less than 5 minutes, realized she
didn't like them, and wanted them off
immediately! Threw a crying fit for the
entire hour and 1/2 it took to soak them
and get them off. She is exhausting me
and I'm a patient person! Otherwise she's
a happy kid and you would never expect
anything. It was suggested to take her to
a psychiatrist and I'm scared to do so.
What if she lies and the psychiatrist
believes it? How do I pick a therapist? I
would want a child's one with experience
in this type of ODD. I'm also affraid of
it scaring her for life if I do or if I
don't. Kids really need parent manuals!!
She already was in rare form when I took
her to the pediatrician for the
evaluation. I'm at my wits end and could
use some advice. Help!!

Hi countrygirl. I wanted to reply to you
sooner but was having difficulty with the
site and the pages wouldn't load properly.
Who knows?
Your daughter sounds somewhat like the
story with my son. I took him to one
medical center and they did an evaluation
and workup and gave me the diagnosis of
ODD and PDD (pervasive developmental
disorder). I went on line, read books and
researched both disorders and came away
with the conclusion that the diagnosis was
wrong. I could see some of the symptoms of
both those disorders in my son but he just
didn't have some of the key symptoms. He
was defiant, raging, sensory issues (TONS
of these), and many other behaviors that
just did not fit with ODD. I took him to a
pediatric psychiatrist. The work up she
did came back with bipolar disorder, which
is the conclusion I had come to at that
point. I was relieved to know I wasn't
crazy. ODD kids are typically violent with
their behavior. They will act out. I know
you read that and I have seen it in some
kids.
Take your daughter to a pediatric
psychiatrist - a doctor. See what they
say. Psychiatrists are accustomed to
clients lying to them. They will not be
easily snowed by a child. To find a
psychiatrist in your area that deals with
children you can go to NAMI.org. This is
the website for the National Alliance for
Mental Illness. They have state by state
directories. If there is no one listed
that is specifically for children call
anyway. Ask if the doctor treats kids. If
not ask who does. If you get nothing there
go to the public school and ask to get a
number for the school district
psychologist. Ask the psychologist for a
reference for a psychiatrist who treats
kids. If no luck there go to your
pediatrician. You need to tell them you
want a pediatric psychiatrist. If you
still have no luck you can private message
me and I will look through my stuff. Go
with your gut on this. You do not think
your daughter is ODD. You know her better
than the pediatrician and school. Keep
going until you are satisfied with the
answers. You may want to look at this site
www.thebipolarchild.com.
a> They have lots of info for parents. I
know you do not have a diagnosis of
bipolar disorder for your daughter but you
may want to look at it. There are good
references there. The site has resources
on it which may lead you to a pediatric
psychiatrist in your area.

My daughter is also ODD and ADHD without
the hitting ect... that you are talking
about too. I have a great book that helped
a lot I'll find the title and post the
title and author here for you.
