Q: Nuvaring and bleeding
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 23rd, 2008
I have been on the Nuvaring for 3 months. I started it in the middle of my cycle, not on day 1-5 of my period. The first month went well, I took it out for a week after 3 weeks and had my period. I put in a new ring and after a couple of days, I started spotting. The next week, the spotting increased to a light period (bright red blood) and it hasn't stopped. I kept the second ring in for 4 weeks and switched it for a new ring right away. Three weeks after I put in the third ring, I took it out and have not put in a new one.

Why am I still bleeding? Will it stop after I have my period/ when I put in a new ring at the end of the 7 days? Should I stop using the ring?

When using Nuvaring you should bleed on every fourth week - while making a pause. It is the same as when using pills. This prolonged spotting could be a side effect from the hormonal contraception. This is a common side effect in the first few months of using hormonal contraception while the body adapts to the hormones from outside.

If the bleeding becomes heavier or continues in the next few months you can stop using the ring. But first you have to consult your gynecologist because organic reasons (tumors, infections…) for spotting should be excluded.
