Q: Nuva ring function and irregular cycles
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 15th, 2009
Hi there,
My question is about how Nuva Ring works. I understand it delivers continuous levels of two hormones and you are supposed to insert it between the 1st and 5th day of your menstrual cycle for it to be effective 7 days later after insertion. However, if your period is irregular how can it still be effective only 7 days after insertion if you insert it after not having had it for a few months? Any insight is much appreciated!

It is possible that the menstrual cycle might be irregular due to a hormonal imbalance.

However, the hormones that are released from the Nuva ring dominate the menstrual cycle and take over the control from the normal hormonal fluctuations in the body.

Therefore, the irregularity of the menstrual cycle does not affect the release of the hormones from the Nuva ring.

In the end, you might want to visit your gynecologist for a more thorough explanation and to check for the cause of the irregular cycles.
