Q: Numbness in left foot
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 6th, 2009
I have had low back pain L4-L5 with impingment on L5-S1.my back pain is mostly gone due to chiropractor but I still have numbness in left foot when I walk for more than 5 or 10 minutes. My question is will this heal on its own with exercise and time, or will I need surgery for this? I really have no pain-just annoyance of numb foot and sometimes tightness in left buttocks. thank you in advance:

Back Pain Answer A5991

The prognosis of your condition can be given only as assumption: the symptoms you experience would likely stay since their source is mechanical (impingement) and not chemical/metabolic. The symptoms are related to the nerve condition caused by the impingement. The only way to solve the problem for good is usually surgery, although the decision whether the surgery would be risk-benefit approved, must be left to the surgeon.
