Q: Numbness after hitting shin
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 20th, 2009
Three weeks ago I fell off a ladder at work and during the fall my shin impacted with one of the ladder's rungs. The pain was immense, and to add to this, as time has gone on I have noticed that the impact zone on my leg has been numb to the touch( just like it has been injected with anaesthetic). There has also been a burning ache sensation around the specific impact area as well as tightness in the muscle around the shin. The whole area was, and is, very tender aside from the numbness. These symptoms are beginning to wane a little however, the numbness remains. I am wondering if these sensations are related in any way to nerve damage or cracked or splintered bone.
I would be very greatful if you could assist with any knowledge or experience gained information that you may have.

Many thanks

Yes, an area of localized numbness after trauma is likely the result of injury to a cutaneous nerve in that area. Certainly, if the impact was hard enough, you can cause a fracture to the bone- an x-ray would answer this for you. It sounds like you should consider seeing a physician to rule out fracture. If you have an injury to a cutaneous nerve, with no muscle weakness, the sensation will likely return to the area over the course of several months.
