Q: Normal symptoms of IBS?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 24th, 2009
I posted before about IBS. My Dr. diagnosed me with it. But, I am starting to get scared. I go to the bathroom 10-20 times a day. And, I only weigh 90 lbs if that now. I am so bloated and am not sure if that is normal. My mom died of Ovarian Cancer and I now that is a sign of it. But, I didn't think you had diarrhea with it. I am so tempted to go back to my Dr. but, just can't afford it. So, I am turning to this board for some answers. Maybe from someone that has IBS and knows about it. I just need to know if the smyptoms I have are normal. I have had this since February. And, I am getting wore down. Thank you.

Intestinal Disorders Answer A6862
Having 10 to 20 bowel movements per day is not normal, even for patients with IBS. Unfortunately, there are multiple potential causes for severe diarrhea, including infection, various inherited disorders which can cause abnormal GI tract function, dietary factors, chronic pancreatitis, certain types of tumors, and other potentially serious illnesses. It is impossible, however, to make a specific diagnosis for any patient over the Internet.

If at all possible, you should be evaluated by a GI doctor as soon as possible.

Sincerely/ Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS

IBS help
I have done research on all of those things you mentioned. I have no pain and no bleeding when I go. It started in February when I found that my boyfriend and father of my 2 kids of 14 years was cheating on me. I had so much stress it messed me up. And, now this will not go away! It doesn't matter what I eat or drink. I do however drink alot of coffee in the mornings. And, that seems to be my worst time. Believe me when I say if I had blood in my stool or if I was vomitting, I would be right at my Dr's. I watched my mother die from Cancer and I get scared when anything is wrong with me. Thank you for your help.

Have you ever been on the celiac diet - i went thru a lot of the same problems. Mine was even causing heart problems. Ibs and celiac have many of the same symptoms and celiac is often misdiagnosed at first for ibs!! it can be very scary - you feel like your dying - and no one will listen and your going crazy. Try eating absolutely no gluten and casein for week and see if the symptoms start to get better. it is a hard diet to follow, but it saved my life, and I hope it will help you.

Important Symptoms
Hi, I read your post and I really felt like I should share my story with you,

My friend was just diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year, she is 24 years old, she is now clear, thank god, after months of chemotherapy. One of the most common symptom of ovarian cancer is excessive diarrhea. She always needed a washroom close by. Another common symptom is back pain. The symptoms are so common that we don't think of it being anything at first. Just to be sure, you should just get checked by you gynecologist. Doctors did not believe her when she was in pain... they said she was too young. She found one doctor who took her seriously Smile I hope this post can help someone,
