Q: Norethisterone and pregnancy ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 4th, 2009
Hi,
I recently got put on norethisterone by my doctor to delay my period before going on holiday. I'm off it now because I'm home but while I was away I had unprotected sex. I'm wondering if it's possible to get pregnant while on norethisterone? I've just had a very short, light period (the day after coming off the tablets) so does that mean I'm OK pregnancy-wise? Or is that the standard thing to happen after coming of the tablets?
Thank you for your help

Hello and welcome to eHealth Forum!

Yes, one can become pregnant when one is on norethisterone to delay the period but chances are less. If you had unprotected sex close to the date when originally your period was expected then you cannot become pregnant. You can become pregnant if you started the tablet after your ovulation and had sex close to ovulation date. However the chances are less as this drug makes the mucus hostile for the sperm.

Yes, bleeding occurs after stopping norethisterone. However some may get a light one and others a heavy bleed. However you should get a pregnancy test done as the period you had was not like your normal one. It could be due to the effect of the drug but to confirm take a test. Hope this helps. Take care!
