Q: no period in over a year

when i turned 18 i suddenly stopped having a period my doctor put me on birth control to regulate it and i stopped taking the birth control because of weight gain and i don't want to have to be on it for most of my life. what is the cause and what can i do to regulate my periods without taking drugs forever?
