Q: No period in 6 months
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 6th, 2009
I haven't had a period in 6 months and I am NOT pregnant. I have acne and I am overweight. I am afraid to see a doctor. Should I see a doctor? Could I have PCOS?

The symptoms you reported might be related to hormonal imbalance. What might have caused the imbalance can not be told without additional diagnostic procedures.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) might be causing this condition, but other conditions have to be excluded, too.
In order to either confirm or rule out PCOS, gynecologic ultrasound might be recommended. In addition, hormonal laboratory tests might show changes in the sexual hormone levels.
Sometimes it takes time for the menstrual cycle to become regular after menarche. In some girls the menstrual cycle does not become completely regular until 17 years. So, this whole situation might be just not completely regulated menstrual cycle.
