Each method of birth control comes with risks to your health. What are the general problems you could encounter?...
I'm a 19 year old college student and was prescribed NuvaRing last September. My doctor told me that I could wear the ring for 4 weeks at a time and insert a new one immediately after taking out the old (thereby skipping my period). When school ended, I went off the ring around June 15 and began my period about 3 days later. It lasted an unusually long time for me, almost an entire week.

Anyways, I was going to go back up to school around July 17 to visit my boyfriend (who is up there doing summer research). I didn't want to get my period during that time, so I inserted a NuvaRing on July 11, pretty late at night (11:30pm or so). On the 17, we had sex twice, used a condom both times. On the 18th, we started having sex without condoms, including once in the day of the 18th and once in the evening. I went off the NuvaRing again when I came home, late on Monday the 21st.

Well, it's Friday morning now and my period is nowhere to be seen. My worry is that perhaps I did not wait the entire 7 days that it takes for NuvaRing to reach its maximum effectiveness... Inserted it on July 11 at 11pm, began having otherwise unprotected sex probably a full 12 hours shy of one week, in the morning of July 18.

I'm going to take a pregnancy test, obviously, but I'm a bit confused how to tell if this period is even missed, considering that I was messing with my cycle pretty heavy-handedly. My cycle off the meds is usually fairly irregular, my period coming 25-35 days apart. I have not had two full cycles in a row for a year now, so I don't know how my body usually would react coming off the NuvaRing.

I know there's a chance that I'm pregnant (condoms and hormones fail sometimes, unlucky me), so I will take a test. But I'm wondering how seriously having sex at 6 1/2 days of continuous NuvaRing wear instead of 7 might have impacted the effectiveness of the contraception. I also do not know how using NuvaRing in the admittedly irregular way I have been using it could impact the timing of when I should test in order to avoid false negatives. I'm under the impression that tests are most trustworthy after one's period is officially late (~5 days) or 9-15 days after ovulation. I don't know when my period (much less ovulation) should be, so I don't know if it's really late or not!

Anyways, if I'm pregnant, I'm likely only 7 or 8 days from conception. Should I hold off on the test or can I take one in the next day or two and get a fairly reliable answer? If I am pregnant, I will terminate (a decision I made before I started having sex), but this is complicated by the fact that I am going out of state for a month for an internship starting on August 10 and will not really have access to abortion services during that time. I'd like to avoid surgical abortion, so I'd like to know whether I'll need said services as soon as possible.

Sorry for this tome. Thanks for your help!

I took a pregnancy test Friday night and it came out negative. My period came on Saturday (hurrah!), a full 6 days after I went off the ring. Out of desperation and to kill time before a pregnancy test, I had been taking megadoses of Vitamin C (about 7 grams a day for 2 days), but I'm loath to ascribe any credit to that unproven remedy. It seems more likely that my body was confused.

Just goes to show that messing with your menstrual cycle hormonally sometimes throws your body off kilter for a while. Perhaps other women in similar situations can read this and take heart!

I've been off Nuvaring since May and I didn't have a period until August, and that was only with the help of Provera. I have always been very regular so if I happen to find out this messed my fertility up, I'm suing the makers of Nuvaring.

Me too.. I have been off since Dec 27th and still no period..I had sex during my ring off week but I use Plan B just in case.. Is it possible that might have screwed up my cycle?? I am already 2 days late on my periods. Is it something to be worried about?

Now I am 14 day''s passed.. when I should have started my period and I''m about to take another test just be on the safe side.. but after reading a lot of girls posting that it''s takes a while for there body''s to get back to normal after stopping the nuvaring... I''ve been on birth control for almost 5 years, this past summer I went on the Nuvaring and last month i took it out, got my period and never put it back in. I''m almost two weeks late this month and I know there is no way I could be pregnant...I don''t understand why going off of this would make your period so late/not come..

Being on birth control for 5 years, your body has become used to the hormone cycle of the birth control. Now your body is adjusting to its own hormones. That can cause issues with a late period. This can go on for a few months.

ok-whew-i kinda feel better...
I have been on the ring since October of 09-very regular 3 weeks in 1 week out usage.
Last month (May)I took my ring out and had my period. I had to make an emergency 4 day trip out of state on the day I was supposed to put my ring back in and there was no way for me to get my new one. So, I figured I would wait a month, have a period and start over. Needless to say, here it is month 2 and I am 6 days late now...I took a pregnancy test 2 days ago and it was negative. I have 4 kids and do NOT want any more. My left breast is swollen and VERY tender and I am starting to panic-my right one is just fine. I don't get it. And if I don't start bleeding soon, I don't know what I'm going to do. How much longer should I wait for my period to return?

Help! Nuvaring put in a week late!
Hi,

I kind of have a similar question. I went away on vacation for a week and ended my period the day i got there and forgot to bring my ring with me so when i got home i put my ring in so does this mean i get my period a week late? since i should have my period today since i took it out 3 weeks after i put it in on the June 12th which was when i got home from my vacation. So i took my ring out on July 4th.

I did have sex with my boyfriend when i got home from my vacation which was silly of me not thinking of wearing a condom i know.. so just wondering what I should do? wait a week to see if i get my period next week or go get a test?

Thanks!

Okay, I've been reading all of the posts and I'm stressing out about my own cycle. I stopped the ring in june and got my period in July & August but it was the shortest cycle I've ever had. I used to average 5-6 days and now it's only been 3 days. then I got my period again in August 5 days early, and again it was only 3 days. I don't know what to think or do anymore. I haven't called the DR. yet but i'm thinking about it. Any thoughts?

NUVA RING WITHDRAWL
I went off nuvaring because my hair was thinning and I was gaining weight this only began 6 months ago, I was on the ring 3 years before any weird side effects happened. I got my last period on August 1, 2010 and never put my new ring in at the end of my cycle, I have never felt better until sept 1 when I got a light brown discharge that ever single website had said was implantation bleeding or a sign of early pregnancy (which I now know is not always true) and was completely panicked that I somehow got pregnant since we had unprotected sex the day after my period ended. I had shooting pains in my side and leg and got dizzy and my nipples had never hurt so bad in my life. I took a pregnancy test this morning because I was so freaked out, my fiance and I are getting married in 6 months and I really want to wait until after our wedding to get pregnant, lucky for us it was negative and 3 hours later I got my period. I think going off the ring definitely messes with your cycle because even off birth control I NEVER had a late period before this month. I hope this helps some

Nuvaring side effects- missed period, anxiety, weight gain
I have been on the Nuvaring for 4 years. LOVED it! So easy, no side effects. We have a 5 yr old. My husband and I decided to start trying for another baby so I took the last ring out in April. I had a regualr period in May but my nipples were SOO sore, then I was 2 days late in June and 3 days late in July and August. I gainded close to 15 pounds! I am 5'5 and have always been a size 4 around 125 pounds since HS! When I was 9 month pregnant I didn't weigh as much as I do now. I chalked it up to being 36 and age catching up to me?? I run half marathons, I do pilates every week, I eat organic and very clean. I do drink red wine every night but I could not figure out what was going on? I was edgey, I was anxious, I get anxiety all the time. And I am one who is on it! I can multi-task like a crazy woman, I have lists for lists. I do so much all the time that this sudden axiety made me think "am I coming or going" It's crazy. Now I've missed my period in September completly. I have taken 4 pregnancy tests and all 4 are negative. I go to my OB tomorrow for a check up and a "real test" so we'll see. BUT I have to say, after reading all these blogs and even some on other sites I feel better. We are all expirencing simialr side effects of this ring. I do want to get pregnant closer to Christmas so if it does happen now that is fabulous but still the weight gain and the anxiety has to be taken care of ASAP! Good luck everyone!
