My baby has his nighttime routine which works great and he falls asleep easy and we put him in his bassinet and everything is just fine...for about the first hour. Then he wakes up screaming. He is 3 months old. Usually when he wakes up it starts with some kicks and wiggles and then a wine and then a cry and so on but at night and only for bedtime he wakes up all of a sudden with a big loud cry. Every night he does this, every night! It is driving me and my husband insane. We can't put him to bed and then go to bed ourselves because we have to wait up for at least an hour or two for him to do his little nighttime wakings. What is he doing? Why is he doing it and how do we stop it?

Do you pick him up quickly when he does this?

My daughter is also 3 months old and would occasionally do that. One night she did it and I couldn't get to her right away, and about 5 minutes later, she completely stopped, fell back asleep and slept for another about 6 hours. I just chalk it up to a nightmare, but my doctor doesn't seem concerned about it since she goes right back to sleep.

Yes, this is true. Babies can wake up in the middle of the night just like adults, but it doesn't mean that they need to get up. Only get him if he cries longer than a few minutes....don't leave him be for more than 5 minutes. Sometimes a few minutes is all they need to find out how to comfort themselves and fall back asleep. It may take about a week or so, but once he realizes that he needs to do this on his own, he will stop making the loud cries for you.

Babies can have nightmares, I know its weird... like what do they have to be scared of. My younger sister when she was a baby she started developing these nightmares at abour 8weeks old. After extensive testing to find out the problem (as she would wake up at around 12 and scream non stop for hours) they worked out that it was her waking up from a bad dream and frightened and screaming. What eventually worked for her was not touching her because when she woke up screaming she was still half asleep and when she got picked up then she would wake completely and not fall back to sleep, but when left she would stop after a bit and then continue sleeping. This may not be your child's problem but for my sister this lasted until she was in her 2's.

Well my baby has colic and she doesn't have those symptoms I spoke abour earlier, she wakes up completely and will keep on crying and screaming until she is burped fed and burped some more ... she feeds every couple of hours but with her she starts of cooing for a bit and if ignored than will scream until somebody respnds, thats why i suggested nightmares for her baby.
