For as long as I can remember, when just falling asleep, or having been asleep for a short time, i've had the sensation of 'jumping awake' a bit like when you feel you've fallen in a dream.

However, for the last couple of years and much more so in the last few months, I shout out loud, jump up and have the most awful feeling of panic. My hearts racing, I'm very sweaty and I have trouble breathing.

In those few moments I'm also convinced I'm dying. I know it sounds melodramatic, and after when I've calmed down, I feel a bit daft to be honest, but at the time it seems very real.

My husband is fantastic and is now an expert at calming me down:)

If anyone can advise me as to how I might be deal with this I'd be very grateful.

I'm 42, three children, not on any medication and in pretty good health.

Thank you Smile

Sarah

Night-time panic attacks
I do exactly the same thing - but my wife tells me to turn the light off she is trying to sleep!

At the time I am convinced I am dying but after waking up I relax I get better - but can feel my heart just racing. I am asthmatic and had connected (rightly or wrongly) to my severe dust-mite allergy. I don't know if this is correct but we removed carpet in our bedroom, and put covers over my bed, duvet, and pillows. It seemed to improve - though not perfect. Recently we moved temporarily into a flat that has carpet and it seems to have increased in frequency again.

So, I am not sure whether it is allergy (if so why only when I initially go to sleep?) or ? related. I am nterested to see posts from others on this.
