try using the ob tampons, they're really small, but they dont come with an applicator

Are you relaxing your vaginal muscles or are you being really tense and nervous about it?

Propping a leg up on something could help too.

hi sweetie, so far you've received some good tips.
1) use ob tampons, they have some really small regulars and you can apply a little bit of lube to the tip if you need to for the first time.
2) make sure you are really relaxing. the foot up on the toilet helps some people. it doesn't do anything for me. some people just to get started can do it laying on their back so you have freedom to put your legs up wherever you need to. personally, it works best for me if i just sit on the toilet and spread my legs wide.
3) it may be that your hymen isn't broken and that won't let a tampon be inserted. if you try to insert a tampon and you can't, go to your doctor and have her check you out to see if maybe that's the problem. sometimes they have to "help" a little with the hymen.
4) tampons are nice and they're a convenience. however they aren't the most healthy thing for your body. i have no problem wearing tampons, but 90% of the time i wear pads just because i think it's healthier. i like wearing tampons more than pads, but i do feel that the pads are healthier.

good luck. if you have additional questions, please try to be as specific as you can so we can help you.
