I have a 5 year old nephew, Jake, that I am taking care of for my brother, probably indefinitely. He is autistic, what I would call a repeater. He repeats anything you say, and will listen to a command or a request, but never expresses himself with words... he simply mimics. I keep him on a pretty strict diet. My problem when he is at school he has access to a lot of crap that I don't even keep in the house. I try to feed him a good. A ratio of 80/20. Eighty percent whole foods, raw food, all organic labeled. In the morning he gets organic hot cereal , wheat, spelt, rye, corn, oats, kamut, and flaxseed sweetened with raw honey. For lunch I try to make him a salad to take to school along with a bottle of fresh orange juice that I squeeze myself or good water. I don't really buy store bought juices. I just have a feeling like, everything good in the juice is dead just so it doesn't visually rot on the shelves. I never buy pasteurized juices. I want stuff fresh, alive. I never let him drink fructose juices either. I remember the parents at my high school were upset because they had soda machines on campus. So the schools "healthy" alternative was coca-cola water and sugar water with 5% juice. Its no different at the 5 year old level.
For dinner Jake usually eats something hot. We cook all kinds of beans and fresh stuff. I I am a vegetarian but he really likes chicken so I have making him some chicken breast a couple times a month (free range, organic) it costs me alot of $ to take good care of him and I am not rich, I do ok. But I think he is worth it. I guess I am being kind of optimistic to think I can cure his autism. But thats my goal. I've also been on some other topics inquiring about nutritional products. I kind of have the same standards with those. No crap, just nutrition. The best i've found is www.peakenergyscience.com/waking but I can't find product reviews ANYWHERE. I don't want him getting used to taking a bunch of drugs. So if he is going to get used to taking pills. I'd rather they were something to benefit him not just numb him and dumb him to make him easier to deal with. My brother was letting the doctors take care of him and they were terrible. He was just a drugged zombie all the time. Since he is with me now he seems like he just woke up out of a coma. Plus my house is a much better environment then my brothers small apartment. Jake and my dog are best friends. But I am struggling because to me, It feels like everyone is out to poison him. I don't even like him eating things that come in a package or that contain "natural flavors." I eat the same way. I just feel like every peice of crappy sugary cheap food that gets in him is 1 step away from our goal. And the crap food is marketed to kids so much better then the healthy food. Even though he is autistic, those advertisments seem to work, when we were at a grocery store (I usually shop at Whole Foods) he grabbed a box of Gushers! I knew it was because of that damn commercial on Cartoon Network. Any advice and nutritional advice would be greatly appreciated. My girlfriend left after I had him for 2 months but he is family.
