Q: neuropathy diagnosis

I have been diagnosed with neuropathy. I am not a diabetic but for eight years have had burning around my chest and stomach. Cool wet towels help. I have tried all the medications used for eplisepy with no help. The doctors seems to be stumped. Stress does seem to make the burning more intense. The burning gets more intense as the day gets later and by the time I go to bed it is like a heating pad on high. Everything I read on this condition is related to being a diabetic. Help

Your problem
When did you last have your blood sugar tested and was it fasting or random?
I am assuming you burning is on the skin and not like acid indegestion?

my blood sugar has been tested at ramdon. My doctor thinks it is stress related. somtime I experience a area about the size of a quarter on my body with intense burning pain.

Ok
Well I really feel you are suffering from anxiety. Maybe you need to look at what is going on around you that may cause you to feel like this. sometime we don't need any triggers to make us feel anxious. Have you read anything regarding anxiety and panic attacks? If you want recommendations for some good book on this I can let you know.
Numbness, pins and needles etc. are a very common sign of anxiety and some really strange symptoms like the others on your skin could also be. If you haven't already you may want to have a skin allergy test just to rule out anything you may be reacting too. If that comes up negative then it is probably a symptom of stress.

I agree anxiety is probably the culpit but it has turned into a physical condition that is getting worse. Yesterday I took a dose of cough medicine that had codeine I noticed the burning stopped I had not felt that in years it was wonderful but I did not like the other effects of the codeine. What does that say that a pain medication was able to stop the burning?

Hmmmm...I would hazard a guess that the codeine which has a sedative effect and therefore calmed you down, decreased your anxiety and stopped the skin problem.

I would agree with your guess but I might add I take 1mg xanax at bedtime. That being an anxiety med would you not think it would have the same effect. The xanax does not relieve the burning the least bit but the codeine did. I just want this burning to stop, I have started to believe it never will.

What is your blood pressure like?
I ask because one of the most effective non drowsy, non addictive medications for anxiety is beta blockers. They lower your blood pressure a little and are very effective in controlling anxiety/stress.
