Q: Neurological or mental causes of leg tremors
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 11th, 2008
Hi, I am a 28 going on 29 year old male. I seem to be having these issues with my extremities usually during night time or generally going to sleep. At first I had these shakey type feelings in my legs which felt kind of like tremors I suppose however you couldn't physically see anything shaking. Kind of like electricity going through your body. Since, it's seemed very downhill. I have a tough time sleeping now because I usually have some kind of tingling or numbess in my hands (usually my pinkies) or my feet or foot which is usually my right foot. Nothing too extreme but enough to freak me out. It also almost seems 90% of the time I wake up I have some kind of numbness feeling, tingling etc. Today I woke up and I had patches on my arms (right above my elbow) that were cold feeling and had that "dead weight" kind of feel. I have never so far felt like I can't walk, or gotten sick, thrown up, had vision issues (except I do have floaters) etc. Any feedback would be great. Thank you.

Leg shaking (tremor) is a symptom that can be seen by a doctor so it is not logical to feel leg shaking that can not be verified by the doctor during the examination. If you only FEEL shaking without really having tremors your problem is rather mental than neurological.

The other symptoms (numbness, tingling, cold feeling…) are more difficult to be proven with a simple neurological examination. They may need an electro-myo-neuro-graphy (EMNG) test or evoked potentials test to prove that these symptoms are the result of nerve or nerve pathways damage. If the tests are positive you may have a neurological disorder including multiple sclerosis. If the tests are negative your symptoms are probably the result of mental issues.

Vision difficulties can be proven by an ophthalmic examination.

You could consult a neurologist about your symptoms.
