Those dark patches on the breasts’ skin
represent thickened skin that is probably
caused by the excessive and prolonged
scratching. It is called neurodermatitis
or lichen simplex chronicus.
Scratching provokes inflammation that
causes more and more itching by irritating
the sensitive nerve ends. The exact cause
of neurodermatitis is unknown but it is
believed that is related to certain skin
disorders (dry skin, atopic dermatitis,
contact dermatitis and psoriasis) and
emotional stress.
You may need a patch-test to exclude
contact dermatitis.
Stopping the scratching is absolutely
necessary for treating neurodermatitis.
Corticosteroid and antihistamine creams
are used to calm the inflammation and
itching. Plastic tapes over the lesion
that keep it wet are also used.
Antibiotics can be used if there is a
bacterial infection. Anxiolitic drugs and
psychotherapy (stress management
techniques) are used to calm the stress.
You may want to consult a dermatologist
about your condition.
