I posted this in the pregnancy forum too, but nobody has responded to it, so I wanted to post it here too. Maybe they are just dumb questions, but I honestly am so nervous about this part of pregnancy, so I just want to see what happened to ther people.

How many of you had your water break on it's own?

Did it happen at home or in public?

Do you go to the hospital right away when that happens?

i've heard that only 10% of women have their water break spontaneously.

it didn't happen to me. i will never forget the feeling of the doctor breaking my water.

i do think you're supposed to head right to the hospital if yours breaks.

The doctor broke my water because I was induced & they wanted to speed things up, but I know my mum's water broke on its own when she had me. It broke before her contractions had even started.. apparently she was putting my sister's hair in plaits & suddenly had to rush to the toilet because she was leaking! Laughing I think she went to the hospital straight away but it was her 3rd baby & she was only in labour for 3 hours.

My water broke by itself whenever I was at home. I didn't believe that it had broken until I had been sitting on the pot for some time and kept getting these little gushes.

I took a shower and then did the hour drive to L&D. I had Luke a few hours later. You probably don't have to worry about it. It doesn't usually happen. I had been in the early stages of labor for quite some time before it broke.

If it does happen though, make sure that you put a towel underneath you in the car. I did and the towel got soaked. Sorry if TMI.

Talk to your dr about if she wants you to come in right away. All doctors are different.

Mine broke on its own, and I was in the middle of the grocery store. Luckily, it was seeping and didn't gush out. I honestly thought I had peed on myself! I quickly checked out and went home. I changed my clothes and I didn't feel anymore leakage. About an hour later I felt really wet again and called L&D to see if I should go ahead and come in. They told me yes and so we made the hour drive to the hospital. 25 hours later, I had my little girl.

My water broke both times, with joseph i had the contractions first then my water was leaking so i wasnt sure what was happening lol, it was like 4am and i was at home. Same with jordynne I woke up 7am with contractions that didnt hurt that bad. I timed them then my water broke wich was very noticable. With joseph we headed to thehospital around 5am. with jordynne after my water broke we all got dressed and headed out there. my sons labor was 6 anda half hrs, and jordynnes was like 4 hrs and something or something like that. 2nd time around when my water broke i put a maxi pad on haha. So my seats were safe.

Mine did not break. I was one day passed my due date and had to be induced for several reasons.. Well 12 hours after they started the pitocin my water finally broke by itself! Since I was hooked up to all the monitors we heard a loud pop and my boyfriend and I both looked at each other really wide eyed and we just knew.. so I layed still and didn't move so it wouldn't leak every where until the nurse could come in!!

mine broke on its own but i was already in the hospital because i was already in hard labor, the doc was about an hour from breaking it too (it happened right before the nurse checked my cervix (she had JUST put her fingers down there lol)

if it does break on its own you need to get in asap because you open up the babies world to germs and infection and cord complications and stuff, also you are supose to deliver no more then 24 hours after it breaks

I was watching TLC (like always) and I think they said 15%. Either way it's less than half, so I'm not too worried about it. No one in my family had theirs break on its own. But who knows, I like to be different without trying lol.

There's a lot of women in general, so 10-15% is a lot of women Razz

P.S. If my water breaks on it's own, I'm blaming this forum Laughing

If your water does break, it's not usually a shamu splash! LOL it's more of a trickle. Mine broke on its own with my second while I was in labor, but I didn't know I was in labor because it didn't hurt the second time. You don't have to go straight to the hospital because your water breaks if you don't want to. It's a matter of how close your contractions are. IMO I would stay away from the hospital as long as possible. Labor progresses much more quickly when you are in familiar surroundings, and many times labor can be stalled if one goes to the hospital before labor patterns are well-established. That sets you up for needing all kinds of other interventions you may not want. Of course, you will need to have these topics covered with your care provider at your prenatal visits. this is just my opinion.

actually, I went to a class last week and they said to get to the hospital as soon as your water breaks and that it was important because the possibility of developing an infection is greater after the water breaks.

OK, then you have a good plan! It's important to trust your care provider and your educator.
