need a man's perspective: Why is my ex contacting me No sex!

Need a man's perspective. Ex BF from many many years ago told me 2 years ago he was in love with me, always had been always would be. We talked on phone and met couple times, nothing physical. His wife found out, which he anticipated via the phone bill. He stopped calling. Fast fwd 2 years. I start receiving texts from unknown number. No clue who it was until they started saying things only he knew. I asked why he wanted to communicate now. His reply again, "Always loved you, always will, together or not." Texts started in early Sept. Weeks of hundreds of texts. Now nothing for 2 wks. Don't know what he is doing or WHY! I liked hearing from him again. He is a very unhappy marriage; married her after she got pregnant, but waited 4 years! On and off again since they dated; fights contantly. Family questions why they are still together. Twins and daughter. I am also married. 3 Children. It's complicated to say the least. I have always loved him too. Held it in until he brought it out 2 years ago when he HAD to tell me his feelings all these years. We live in a small town and see each other all the time, even if it's just driving by. WHAT IS HE DOING???
