near accident causing depression and anxiety Posted: 01-21-08 16:26pm
I would like to tell everyone my story and
ask if you have any insights.
I have always been over weight and have
always ate fast food and sweets (for the
last 30 years or so). The minute I heard
about Hypoglycemia a few years ago I knew
I had it. I would pig out on lots of high
refined carbs and then sleep it off,
waking up later feeling miserable. Then I
would down many cups of coffee to feel ok
again. I have ate like a mad-man for
years...sweets, carbs, coffee, McDonalds,
on and on and on...
This had been my diet for years and made
me very overweight. I then started doing
atkins last year and lost about 20 pounds
and felt ok, then around October, I had a
mild-tramatic event (almost had a car
wreck). I saw my life pass before my very
eyes and it upset me very much. After this
I started having terrible anxiety and
depression episodes. All thru the holidays
I could barely sleep from all-night
anxiety. I abruptly also stopped atkins
and went back to my old, high-carb,
sweets, diet and was miserable all thru
the end of this year and early January
this year.
It was time to go to the doctor as I
thought I was having mental problems due
to the trauma and needed an SSRI. My
doctor refused to put me on them and said
I needed to look at my diet and vitamins
and minerals. I thought she was crazy. But
I did what she said and started feeling
better. I asked her if it may be related
to hypoglycemia. She said only if I had a
tumor. Which freaked me out and I still
don't understand.
She took blood and said I do not have
diabetes nor anything else out of the
ordinary. She said I probably do not have
hypoglycemia and she recommended I get a
huge does of vitamins and such and start
back on the Atkins Diet.
I have since started back on Atkins and
feel alot better, I can certainly sleep at
night now. However, I do have depressive
episodes, especially around noon, and 4pm.
(Peak times). I am almost 100% ok during
the night time before bed and in the early
morning now. (I know, this isn't
hypoglycemic traits).
My question to the group is: Do you
suggest anything to help the depression
episodes?
And what role did the near-accident trauma
have on me? I still have bad thoughts on
the near-acident. Very intrustive, almost
OCD type fears.
Also, do I really have to give up coffee?
Thanks in advance,
DB

If you have hypoglycemia you have to give
up coffee, but unfortunately in your case
it's tough to tell, and it won't be easy
to tell until you follow a relatively low
carbohydrate diet for at least four months
straight with no screw-ups. Once you do
that, you can see how much your glucose
levels are affecting your thinking,
otherwise it could be either or. Good
thing is, unlike medicine, the diet poses
no risk, it can only make you better or
just not work for you because it's not an
issue.
