Q: Nausea when laying flat

I have a hole in my right ear drum. This is a result of a rupture from many, many ear infections as a child. The hole never healed, and I have slight hearing loss. I cannot lay vertical without my head proped up. Even while I sleep, I have to prop my head up on a couple of pillows. When I try to lay completly vertical, I get very nauseated, like motion sickness. Could this be sometime attributed to the inner ear?

Nausea while lying flat
Yes, it's the same with me! However, I've had this my whole life, and have had no inner ear damage, that I know of. I was physically abused as a child, and often hit around my head--I wonder if that could affect it? Anyway, I get the same way. I get sick everytime I go to the dentist or orthodontist, and feel dizzy and nauseous whenever I try to spin, somersault, etc. I have to sleep on my side, as well.

Isn't it possible to surgically fix your ear drum? Have you seen a doctor?

Yes, getting hit, especially around the ears can cause damage. It's not uncommon with boxers, for example.

In the mean time, have you tried motion sickness drugs? People get motion sickness when the motion detected by the inner ear doesn't match the visual signals from the eyes. That might help, but is only a temporary fix.

Willa 1221 and ktfrancie- Welcome to eHealth! I agree with Lydia32 about seeing a health care professional. I do not agree on taking motion sickness meds as they are nothing more than benedryl or the equivalent ingredients. This would only be a temporay fix and form what you;ve both said, you both need to be checked by an ear nose and throat professional to see if and what damage has been caused...before any type of diag. is prescribed. I wish you both the best of everything....
