Q: Natural remedies for depression ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 19th, 2009
I have sufferd from depression, anxiety and panic attacks for as long as I can remember. I have been on effexor for 8 years I think it is and cannot take the sexual side effects anymore so with my doctors help I have taperd off of them. Im on day 6 without right now. I have been doing alot of research online for natural remadies and have been taking the following. B50 complex, a pill called omega3 joy and also marine phytoplankton. What are your opinions on these natural remedies? I just would like to know if there is any risks with any of these or the combination or anything to avoid while taking them. Anything else you can suggest? Ive been trying to excersize and such also.

Hello and welcome to eHealth Forum!

It is good that you are trying to overcome depression by natural remedies. If you need to take a Vitamin B complex and omega 3 fatty acids, you should ideally take them on doctor’s prescription. Natural products such as marine phytoplankton do not go through extensive research for safety for human use. Hence how safe they are cannot be predicted.

If you do not want to take medication, which is a good thing, then you can talk to your psychiatrist about alternate therapies. You can try yoga and meditation at home, along with deep breathing exercises. Music and aerobics are also good stress busters. Drink plenty of fluids and water (not caffeine), eat fresh fruits and vegetables and keep yourself busy throughout the day.

Please discuss this with your psychiatrist and follow the relaxation techniques and you should do well. Hope this helps. Take care!
