narcolepsy and bipolar
Hi there

Bypolar is the ups and downs of high adrenaline, and the low afterwards.
It is the activation of the fight or flight mechanism of the brain.
The brain sees allergens as being attacked (which it is) and produces massive amounts of adrenalin to fight off the attackers.

This high lasts until the amount of adrenalin has been used.
Then the low starts, in which a person experiences extreme tiredness and possibly falls asleep during the day at inappropriate times, such as at work or school, after which time the allergen is consumed again and the cycle starts again.
The most common allergen, and the most often consumed allergen is dairy.
Instead of taking antipsychotic medication like Lithium, Valproate/Divalproex, Carbamazepine, Lamotrigine, Topiramate, Gabapentin, or any of the other poisons usually issued for this (allergic) disorder, I suggest a zinc supplement of 1000 mg a day, taken with the main meal, give up dairy products for one month and see the improvement.
You'll never want to suckle off the cow again!

Good luck

Hi there

The above dose of zinc is meant to read 100 mg NOT a 1000.

Hello, I also have narcolepsy and bipolar disorder. I was diagnosed w/ Bipolar first, then a few years later came the narcolepsy. I take Lithium, Abilify, & Lexapro for Bipolar, and I take Provigil for Narcolepsy. Things are going very well, only have had two "blips" of slight hypomania in the past 3.5 years. not too bad! good luck, karen

I need real advice fast
I have been in an on off relationship for 6 yrs, I suspect ,,after research that my partner is bi polar,,,problem being he would never admit it, let alone seek treatment for the situation, when things are good,,they are fantastic, but when things are bad, its verbally vicious and nasty to a point of separation. But for some CRAZY reason we always end up back together. I love him and i supsect he loves me,,,but when he's bad, he's very bad. When we are together i am happy and confident, but when we are apart i have major panic attacks and my world just closes in around me, we have a 4yr old son together,, who is affected by the on and off process, sometimes i just want to keep on walking, but dont want to put my son into the single parent scenario,,as i said when things are good,,they are good and he is a good dad,,,but i dont want my son growing into adulthood disrespecting woman,,,as his dad does when he's on a low. I have just read another blog about taking a zinc supplement and deleting dairy from the diet,,can anyone explain,,how this will help ,,
Desparate for answers,,thanx,

Bipolar 1 and Narcolepsy
Lithium, Klonopin, and Adderall
I'm 25 years old and I have BiPolar1 disorder and Narcolepsy in addition to ADD. Although the more I read, the ADD may just be the Narcolepsy (who knows). I only recently had my Narcolepsy diagnosis confirmed in May (they had been looking for signs of sleep apnea and missed the diagnosis during the initial sleep study, but a second study with a different doctor this past spring confirmed the REM sleep abnormality) but my psychiatrist suspected it for a while after ruling out just about everything else. I currently take Lithium for the BiPolar after trying several other medications. The last medication I tried was Lamictal which seemed to increase my sleepiness to the point I almost lost my job. I seem to do well on the Lithium as long as my levels stay up and I don't forget to take it.
I'm currently taking Klonopin and Adderall for the Narcolepsy. The Klonopin to help with staying asleep longer during the night and the Adderall to stay awake and focused during the day. I just added the Klonopin (very very low dose) and it appears to be helping. I also have a vitamin B deficiency and the getting the B12 shot does seem to help my energy level also.

I was diagnosed with BiPolar in college and looking back had symptoms of Narcolepsy probably since high school but they only seemed to worsen in the past three years after i took a job that required me to wake up at five am almost every day. Before they finally found the Narcolepsy, I had been tested for everything from thyroid issues to iron deficiences to Lymes Disease.
Lesson learned make them test for the least likely first and go from there.
