Q: Myopia and its causes
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 11th, 2008
I've been short-sighted (myopic) since the age of 7. I'm 29 now and my myopia is still increasing every year by appx. 0.5 degrees. Now I have 8.50 on the right eye and 9.50 on the left, with 0.75 and 0.5 astigmatism respectively which has stabilised. Doctors keep telling me that they dont know when it will stop increasing but it should have. They believe that this condition is due to my close up work and my intense use of computer. But since this is my job (I'm an English teacher) i can't stop either reading or using the PC. Pls. note that my eye pressure is normal, and i have been wearing glasses (no contact lenses) since the first time I was diagnosed with myopia. Moreover, no one in my family is short-sighted.
I would like to know whether a relative research has been made and what may causes the myopia increase after so many years. Is it ever going to stabilise?
Thank you.

Vision and Eye Disorders Answer A4687
Current medical status: High myopia and still increasing
Current medical treatment: Myopic eyeglasses

In most cases myopia becomes stable but in certain cases (degenerative or malignant myopia) the condition progressively gets worse.

The real causes for myopia occurrence and its progression are still unknown. It is believed that various genetic and environmental factors cause either eyeball elongation or increased curvature of the cornea or variation in the index of refraction of one or more ocular media.

You should consult an ophthalmologist about your eye condition.
