I haven't got my period since March 2011. About 2-3 weeks ago (last weeks of dec) I spotted here and there! My nipples are sore & when I take off my bra my breast feel heavy! My stomach has been burning, like acid. I cramp a little but can bearly feel it,not painful cramps but noticable! I've been very emotional & grumpy (stress??) I am sexualy active & I took a pregnancy test on Nov 9 it came out negative. The months of nov. I was discharging brown & smlly stuff with a lil blood but that has stopped since the mid. Nov. Help? Anyone ever had these sympotms?if you did was it pregnancy or something else?

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth forum!

Basically you have secondary amenorrhea or absence of periods/menstruation due to some thing. To get a clear picture take a blood test for HCG levels. This will give a clear indication as to whether you are pregnant or not. If this is not the case, then other causes will have to be looked into. Stress and anxiety is a major factor. Thyroid problems and abnormal levels of FSH, LH, prolactin, androgen hormones or male hormones and estrogen hormones too can be the cause. MRI of brain may be required to rule out pituitary tumors secreting prolactin.

Another major contributor is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). This can be diagnosed by a CT scan or abdominal ultrasound and tests for insulin resistance. Smoking is also often associated with secondary amenorrhea and can be worse in presence of stress. Sometimes tumors of the ovaries and brain may also cause absence of menstruation.

Severe anemia and malnutrition, excess weight gain or weight loss, hypothyroidism too can contribute. If you have been on pills or depot shots then this can be post pill amenorrhea. Since you have acidity, cramping, weight gain, spotting, etc, chances of PCOD are high. Since a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net please consult your gynecologist regarding this. Hope this helps. Take care!
