Lucian Nathaniel entered the world on his due date 11th March at 8.20pm. He weighs 8lb 4oz and was 57cm! I originally wanted a homebirth but at last minute after realising I was having another back labour decided I wanted the pool that they offer at the hospital.
My contractions started around 3pm after I'd just decided to go for a lie down (typical) they were about 5 mins apart but when I rang the hospital they told me to come straight in as I had fast labour so after giving my other two kids dinner we dropped them to my mums and set off for hospital. The contractions were about 3 mins apart by then.
I got there and had to wait for room to be free so I leant over the chairs in the waiting room through each contraction. The visitors looked very nervous lol. Midwife checked me once we were in the room and said I was 4cm and it's going to be quite a fast labour. My waters hadn't gone yet though.
I got in the pool once it was ran and it was heaven! It took all the pressure off my back and my hubby rubbed my back through each contraction. They were really managable and I squatted in the pool each time I got one and did slow breathing.
The contractions started coming thick and fast about 6pm so midwife gave me the gas and air and put the radio on. I took a few breaths and felt drunk. I was walking around the pool dancing to the music and laughing! I didn't take too much of it as I felt so calm and relaxed (like I'd had a few too many alcopops lol)
Around 8pm I started getting spasms like my body wanted me to push so midwife asked me to get out if the pool so she could check how dilated I was. I laid of my back and the 3 contractions I got on there were absolute agony! I needed the gas and air heavily whilst she checked me- further proof women should not labour on their backs!
She confirmed I was 9cm and my waters were bulging so she said she'd break them to speed things up as this was what was delaying my labour. She later told me if she'd broken them when she first checked me he would of been out in half the time but she wanted it to be as natural as possible
She broke them and I needed to push straightaway. I wanted to get back in the pool but it was over the other side of the room and I knew I couldn't make it so I got off the bed and squatted. I immediately started pushing him out and within 10 mins he was born. He came out with his hand against his face which made it harder but I actually liked the pushing contractions cause they felt so productive and I knew I would meet my baby soon. He was born at 8.20pm exactly and after delivering the placenta 5 mins later I was up and about.
