Over the past month or so i have noticed that i get cramps in my right leg and foot frequently from doing simple things as trying to put my shoes on. At night i have been awakened several nights to what feels like a muscle contraction/spasm. Intense pain shooting up the back of my leg to the back of my thigh and i am unable to move my feet. It lasts anywhere from a few seconds to about fifteen minutes. It has happened twice when i attempted to get out of bed and when i tried to walk i found i couldn't because of the pain.
I dozed off yesterday evening half sitting half lying with my head on the arm of the couch and my feet propped up on the coffee table. I was startled awake because i felt my feet twitching involuntarily. Should i be concerned about this? Should I see a doctor?

You could be developing restless leg syndrome. Uncontrollable movement or a feeling that you have to move the legs, is a hallmark of this disorder.

Muscle cramps are very common in the lower extremities, especially the feet. If they occur randomly and occasionally, about the only thing you can do is put the muscle on stretch until the cramp resolves.

If it seems that you are developing a lot of cramps, it could be due to an electrolyte imbalance, particularly potassium or sodium. But, this is not really all that common, though it is always listed as a possibility.


So, if the movements and cramps become too much for you to handle, see your physician for an evaluation.

I was looking at your reply just now. You suggested electrolyte imbalance. I looked up some of the symptoms and realized that they match what I am experiencing now. I was Okay while i was on break for the christmas holidays (no leg cramps). I started school again 7 weeks ago. I am a final year science major who does not live on campus so I have to commute. I find that I rarely have time to sit down and have a proper meal. I may eat a proper meal maybe three times a week. Sleep is also a luxury. Over the last few weeks though I have felt extremely fatigued to the point where I have to put off doing assignments and just go to bed. Even after sleeping for 10-14 hours I would not feel refreshed. I would still feel fatigued. I experience dizziness quite often and have mild (tolerable) muscular aches particularly in my shoulder joints, upper arms and legs. Today while drawing some diagrams in a lab my hands trembled so badly I had to erase my drawings several times to get them right.
