My car accident was june 7th of last year and I still have pain on my lower back, mostly in one spot. Doctors say I have no muscle tissue damage and that everything looks normal. I keep getting muscle spasms in my pelvic bone muscle area and its just horrable. I'm always taking muscle relaxers and nothing is helping me. And I often get shooting pain from the top of my hip and at the bottom of my ankle. What can I do to help this?

Jennifer143,

The shooting pain from the hip to the ankle may be sciatica, or irritation of the sciatic nerve (the large nerve in the back of the thigh).

Unfortunately, muscle relaxant medicines have no actual pharmacological action on muscle tissue. They are prescribed basically because they are very sedating. Many patients with back pain or muscle pains, if they can get some sleep, will feel better. But, again, they will not actually help with spasms or any other muscle disorder. They don't have any direct action on muscle.

Massage and heat are probably better at dealing with muscle spasms that anything else.

But, other than that (along with the usual physical therapy of stretching and strengthening), there's not a whole lot else to do. If the pain becomes so significant that you cannot be productive and enjoy life, then you may want to see a pain management physician or a physiatrist (a specialist in PM&R - physical medicine and rehabilitation). You would need a thorough evaluation to determine what exactly is going on, and what more can be done about it.

Good luck.
