Q: Multiple Sclerosis and SSI Benefits

Hi guys, I'm 20 years old I was diagnosed with MS three months ago. I am currently out of work and I do not have insurance. I applied for Social Security in order to get insurance because I am a full time college student and my studies are my main priority. I would like to know if I would hurt my chances of getting SS benefits if I went back to my part time job... and also if you guys have any stories of your experience with applying to social security please share them..

thanks in advance :]

You will hurt your chances of getting SS benefits if you go back to your part-time job. When applying for disability benefits you have to prove that you can't work at all. You can apply for medicaid without applying for disability if you make less than a certain amount of money but if you are working or able to work you will be denied disability benefits. I hope this answers your question.

I'm not sure. I on temp. disability right now and I was told not even to think of volunteering. I do go to school but it's online. If you're telling them you can't work and they see you can do an internship it might be a problem. They are tough.

yeah.. I have problems with getting around. I have just been feeling really depressed and out of touch with myself. It seems like I cannot do anything and on top of that my family isn't in the best financial situation and there's no way for me to help out. It gets so frustrating!!

Well, with an MS diagnosis and depression you should be able to get disability. You are going to school. Do you want to be on disability or would you rather try to work? There are some really good medications now to treat MS. To me, it would even be more depressing not to be able to work the rest of my life. Those are some things you should think about. You can apply for Medicaid without going on disability. Did you know that? Are you taking medications for MS and depression?

When I went to the social security office they told me to try and get medicaid through welfare, but they just gave me the run-around. I don't want to spend my entire life not working. I mainly care about the insurance because there isn't any other way I'd be able to get it. I have been taking avonex for a month now.. and I haven't been diagnosed with depression.. it is just the way i feel. I get aggravated easily and on top of MS i am stuggling with obesity.

I understand your feeling depressed. Well, I don't know how it works in your state but I'm in Florida and you can just go online and fill out an application for medicaid. It goes by your salary. It helps if you have a child under the age of 18. Many people get medicaid for the health benefits without having to be on disability. Are you trying to lose weight? Obesity will really make your MS a lot worse.

Yeah I am trying to lose weight. I want to start the gym. Not having a job and living with a big family makes it hard to stay on track.. But i'm trying. I had the gastric bypass in 2006 and only lost about 100 pounds. I have gained 25 lbs back. I think something went wrong with my surgery because it didn't lose the weight I was supposed to have lost. I am hoping to get approved for insurance so I can consider having a revision done. How long did it take you to get approved for temp. benefits?

My case is different. I get temp. disability from an insurance company that I made payments to when I was working. It was part of my benefits. I don't have medicaid but I know that you can go online and fill out an application. I wish you luck with your application and weight loss. Eat small meals throughout the day and stay away from the junk food and coffee. Drink more water and start slow with the exercise. Walking is very good for cardiac and burning calories. I'm heading to the treadmill myself because it's just too hot outside down here in FL. I do yoga too and that's great for people with MS. There are some women in my yoga class who do struggle with obesity. It's all stretching so you just do what you can. Mentally it's great! Keep in touch!

Hi--at the hospital I use to work at we have a great Bariatric unit..There are those who have had the bypass that began to gain weight back..A few have come in and had the lap band placed..Unfortunately even with the bypass a person can eat around the bypass as they can the lap band..But with your already having the bypass the band would be an added benefit..
Remember 100 lbs loss is great..That ws 100 lbs you use to not be bale to keep off that the surgery helped with..If you haven't been attending support meetings you may want to try that..Obesityhelp.com is a great online group..Best wishes to you..I do understand -I have MS symptoms but not the diagnosis..It is hard but you can do it..Keep on on your schooling..That is real important keep your mind occupied..What are you going to school for?
