Hi everyone

I was wondering if anyone could help me with my query.I started getting visual problems in my right eye about 3 years ago where it was difficult to read and drive. I saw an eye specialist at the hospital who kind of dismissed it and discharged me a year later after having electrophysiology tests that came back inconclusive. The eye thing has flared up again in the same eye 3 months ago, and on being sent back to the hospital, was diagnosed with optic neuritis. One day in May, I lost my vision completely in my left eye and my work sent me to A&E. Again it was found that it was the optic neurities which has moved to the other eye. The specialist mentioned the possibility of MS and arranged for a MRI scan which I have since had.

Since being advised it might be MS I have since been looking at various sites for information (this one being the most helpful by far). While reading (with difficulty)I can identify with many of the ailments, here is my list:

Did have pain in right hand last year (which kept me up most of the night for a month!) Doctor's put it down to a trapped nerve caused by my weight! (OK I'm not skinny but I am fairly heavy, I'm working on it)

I get pains in my right arm (keep thinking I slept funny) which sometimes makes that arm useless.

Pain in the heel of my feet (mainly left) if I have been standing or sitting with feet raised for too long. When trying to use my feet to walk, reach somthing, I get shooting pain up my leg causing my knees to buckle.

I've been getting dull aches in my lower legs (feels like going down my shins) and have started getting these in my arms in recent years

I am recently experiencing numbness in the top left side of my lip, roof of mouth and sometimes my tongue.

If anyone has any advice I would be extremely grateful as I'm near my wits end.

MS sometimes will present itself with Optic Neuritis.

I'd suggest that you seek an appt with an MS specialist to either confirm or rule out MS.

Don't be disappointed if this does not happen overnight as MS is a difficult diagnosis to make.

MS can mimic other disease and other disease can mimic MS.

Best Wishes,

Zig

MS: Getting a certain diagnosis and getting treated
Hey there my friend. I had alot of the same symptoms that you just described, including the optic nueritis (it was very painful). Visual disturbances were minimal and included 'white out' in my peripheral vision.

I had a strange numb/tingling sensation that started in my legs and over a year or so crept its way up to my mid torso. Sensations in legs worsened when stretching my neck downward (chin to chest). I had no insurance at the time and was hoping it was a pinched nerve.

About two years later I finally saw a doctor who rather quickly read my symptoms as possibly being MS (ironically I was not having symproms at that particular time). Reffered to a neurologist, got an MRI (brain and spine with contrast and a dedicated MRI of the C spine) blood work, and spinal tap. Sure enough, three lesions on the C spine just below the brain.

I was on Copaxone within a month and have been taking it everyday (almost) since (3yrs). No relapses, no new lesions, no new symptoms, no loss of mobility or coordination.

I can't speak highly enough of Copaxone! Easy, almost painless injection, NO SIDE EFFECTS. Who wants to be made sick with interferon blockers and immuno-suppressants? F-that.

Stay positive my freind. And avoid the gloom and doom stories and gut wrenching personal accounts. My heart goes out to anyone devistated by this disease but as far as I've experienced, this is as good a time as any to have MS. Much better treatment and therapy and lots of promising research.

And lastly, keep yourself well rested and avoid unecessary emotional stress. You don't have to hide from life, but really try to avoid high levels of stress and turmoil. I honestly believe that plays a huge role in auto-immune disorders.

All the best and God bless!

Optic Neuritis and MS
hi, long before I was finally diagnosed with MS I had optic neuritis. the first time they told me it was eyestrain as I was reading alot in grad school. then I lost parts of my vision 6 months later. Then 20 years later when I got it again and lost my color vision an intelligent opthamologist told me that can be an indicator of MS. He also said that you usually get a less extreme form of MS. Get an MRI and keep checking!
