Q: MS symptoms and diagnoses through prescribed tests
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 19th, 2008
I started exp. poss. symptoms of MS about 6 months ago.My first incident was mild, since it lasted less than 24 hours. But, it did cause some concern so I went to a neurologist. My first symptom was a shocking feeling that ran up and down the back on my right leg. This lasted about 24 hours. The next day the shocking went away, but then I experienced a burning feeling on the front of my leg, almost like I was sunburned. This went away after 24 hours.I had an MRI of my brain, given my family history(father has MS). The results came back with multiple white spots, but according to my doctor they were small and not located in the parts of the brain that usually signify MS. However,he did say that he could be wrong and wanted me to get a 2nd opinion with an MS specialist, who apparently is one of the best in the country. I saw him about 2 weeks ago, and he just said we have to play the waiting game and go for additional tests(mri and EMG). Does this sound like it could be MS?

Both your symptoms and MRI-report sound like multiple sclerosis. Additional tests like an EMG, evoked potentials, and a spinal tap can confirm or exclude the diagnosis for MS.
