Q: MRIs for infants and children
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 24th, 2009
Our daughter has had two SOGS tests one at 2 years 7 months and one at 3 years 2 months. Most scores are below her age. Her speech and language is rated the worst at 15 months on both occasions (same score). During this time she has been attending speech therapy classes but they don't appear to be having much affect. We have seen a paediatrician twice now and had all the blood tests and hearing tests completed without concern. The paediatrician has suggested a MRI scan which will involve putting her to sleep. We think her speech is significantly delayed to have concerns but are not sure whether this outweighs the risks of the MRI scan. We do not know what the MRI may find and if it finds anything whether is it going to be treatable? If we don't have the scan could we be putting our daughter at risk?

You are advised to do the MRI and the other examinations needed to check for any pathological processes. You should not be afraid of the results. The fear would not change them. Instead, detecting the problem on time might provide you enough time for proper treatment and/ or therapy. The child’s brain still develops in the first years of life and certain of its functions might be transferred to the unaffected tissue. Just, please make the examinations, visit a neurologist if needed, be patient and in the end you would be rewarded with a healthy child whom you give all your love and gives you back the unconditional love that only a child can give.
