I am 58 year old, retired from work Jan 2006 because of pain and close hand, took 1 year to be refer to a Hand surgeon so finally April 2007 had (2) surgery at same time : CTS left upper extremity; compression of Ulnar nerve @elbow and Dupuytren contraction of left palm
had no complication. By Oct & Nov 2007 was given cortisone shots..
Jan 2008 started having Halo in left eye lost complete vision for about 45 mins. went to doctor order blood work... nothing
Feb 2008 awlful lower back pain.. was bed ridden for 4 days finally was able to get a doctor appt.. nothing
Finally I changed GP after 18 yrs.
April 2008 new doctor he ordered 2 mri (MAY) and ultrasound of kidneys.Left hand pain and claw like shoulder froze up and lower back pain,
June 11 received 2 shots,
June 24 (2) more shots,
July 9, (1) shot to lower back.
July 15, back to hand doctor... he says it is definely nerve in neck for claw hand fingers stiff, swollen, shoulder pain. July 16, started massages weekly. Still in pain, arm, shouler, lower pain.. Leg cramps, tingling in toes foot asleep, numbness in buttocks No restful sleep waking up, leg cramps, hand cramps
As of today while typing this lost vision left eye... silver halo around the eye with limit vision, this lasted for 15 mins.
worry to death what is going on.. Still no word from GP doctor for a referral neuosurgeon like the Hand doctor suggested. Do I find a doctor on my own? thought of chiropractor.
I live Gulf coast (Katrina) we also lost doctors relocated ( insurance cost for them) and the few left here have bad reputation (from friends) for screw up and quack job. Have very good insurance now. Please help just don't know which way to go. Thank You g2r

Hello Jackie,

Welcome to this forum Jackie!!

It HURTS to read what you have been through and are still going through. Plus you have been through Katrina.

I will give your posts some thought before I respond later today.

Take care.

Hello Jackie,

AHHhhh a bit better now after a rest.

I understand your wish to have in understandable terms a "translation" of your MRI report. Jackie, I would highly recommend that you get your doctor's thoughts on the report AFTER he/she has had time to actually review the MRI images. I honestly do not believe anyone on this forum can do so properly. It takes a spinal surgeon to be able to do so. EVEN my GP won't try to "analyze" the MRI images of my spine. Thank goodness!!!

If you are currently not under the care of a spinal surgeon, then I would highly recommend that you do so.

Okay, on to your 2nd post. Thanks MUCH for all the info you have shared with us

Jackie, PLEASE see the very best ophthalmologist who you can find. From your post it appears best that you seek such a doctor outside of the area in which you live. Not easy to do I know. Is there a major city north of where you live that was not hit by Katrina? If, so, that is where it may be a good idea to begin looking for the specialists that you need to have.

In my opinion you need to move on beyond your GP. Don't wait for him/her to recommend a specialist. Far better that you do so yourself. Talk to those you know and find out who they liked and did not like. Call the office of a professional sports team and ask which doctors they use for their players. Call the hospitals in a metro area and ask the person you talk with who they personnally would go to for the issues you have. Push them if you have too.

SOOOooo very glad that you have good insurance now. That helps so much.

Okay, you wondered about going to a chiropracter. Some seem to like them. However, speaking for myself, I'd never go to one. I don't believe in their "popping" this and "popping" that. THAT to me is not how I wish to be treated. Proper physical therapy under the direction of a medical specialist (with MD after their name) is fine, but no chiropracter for me.

Jackie, I am no doctor, however, much of the effects that you have described indicate to this spiney nerve damage caused by some issue in perhaps your back.

PLEASE do also see a spinal surgeon. Again, the very best one who you can find. AND do so without delay. It may also be a good idea to see a shoulder specialist.

If you need any help seeking a specialist do let me know by PM.

Take care. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hello Jackie,

Back again. I neglected to "chat" about the "shots" that you have had. First qestion - Did they all contain a corticosteroid? If so, the rule of thumb from the spinal surgeons and the pain management doctor I see is NO more than 3 corticosteroid injections in a given year.

If I read correctly you had injections on/in

Oct "07
Nov '07
June 11 '08 2 injections
June 24 '08 2 injections
July 9 '08 1 injection

Jackie, if each of those injections contained a corticosteroid, that is far more than recommended by spinal surgeons.

Yes, back in '07 I too had more injections to close together than I should have. No, I did not have any noted side effects, however, that will not happen again for me.

Thoughts and prayers.

Thank You for your help in this.. I am trying very hard to get help but no one seems to care or understand. Do this do that wait and come back but with no answers. My GP just brush the MRI off like that was not a problem.. By the time I went back to Hand Surgeon he was very upset and told me to go back and get a referral to neurosurgeon nothing less than that. "You have a messed up back, a very messed up back" and that ist is a nerve in the neck it's in the report he read it and re-read it "Go to neurosurgeon ASAP.
this is reading off docto's office notes
7/09 i don't have his report yet.. Lower back.
6/24... she received 40 depoMedrol w/ 1 of lidocaine and Marcaine in shoulder and 2nd shot same dosage in her lateral epicondyle. (shoulder and elbow)
6/11 gave her Depo-Medrol 80mg w/ 1cc of lidocaine with each site (hip and elbow)

my hand surgeon gave cortisone shots into the wrist,,, Oct and Nov 2007.
I finally called the referral doctor office yesterday trying to get the ball rolling, they will get back to me after the doctor reads my reports. He is very new to coast less than (1) year. I tried calling another but he will not see me w/o a referral.
My GP doctor is very good but his office's staff and nurse sucks big time.. Claim they are over worked and un pay and I am at their mercy.
medicine I have been on since Jan 08 cymbalta 30mg/60mg
lyrica
finally prednisone 21 day dose.
no luck with any, bad side effects with no relief.
again I ramble but I hurt. Thanks for listening and letting me vent.
