Q: MRI results and biopsies
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 1st, 2009
I have3 a lump on my jaw directly in front of my ear on the right side. I am very worried as my doc said this could be lymphoma and now I am set for a biopsy. I have read in many forums that many TMJ sufferers have this lump on their jaw in front of the ear. Is this a common trait for TMJ that goes untreated? Could this be related to TMJ or is my doc onto something? I am extremely worried here. My MRI came back showing a mass in the jaw area. Could this mass be related to TMJ or are all masses shown by an MRI scan tumors?

If the MRI stated that it was a mass then chances are it is not muscle or bone (as involved with "TMJ").

It seems reasonable that the MRI should have reported the lump as muscle or bone if that is what it was. I say "should have" because not all radiologists will state it. If the doctor read the report and ordered the biopsy then it is a good idea to follow through with it. You can always get a second opinion. Good luck.
