Q: mri result

Hello, everyone.

I got my mri result back and I want to share with you.
Because I am just normal house wife, I have some hard time to understand these.
If somebody can help me, please do so....

1. In the right temporomandibular joint the disc is laterally displaced in the closed position. This is reduced in the open position. There is no evidence of anterior displacement of the disc in the right temporomandibular joint, either withe the mouth in close or withe the mouth in the open position.

2. There is no focal bone abnormalith in the right temporomandibular joint. The range of motion in that joint is fairly well preserved.

3. In the left temporomandibular joint there is medial displacement of the disc in the closed position which is reduced in the open position. There is however, diminished anterior translation of the disc from the closed to the open mouth position.

4. There si slight limitation of the range of motion in the left temporomandibular joint. No definite focal bone abnormality is identified in the left temporomandibular joint.

5. There is no anterior displacement of the discs in either temporomandibular joint.

About a month ago, I was hit by storm door knob in jaw area.
My TMJ doctor said that because of the incident, my jaw is shifted to right side. So my discs are dislocated.
That means I need to do splints(upper and lower) for 1 year to place back my discs.

However, my primary doctor told me today that the mri report is just fine.
Everybody could have that much problem.
I just have some inflammation inside. If I take some medicine, it will be fine.

I just want to trust my primary doctor. However my TMJ doctor is really famous guy, I don't think it is good idea to ignore him.

Is there anyone who can help me to understand the mri result?
Does it mean really bad?
My doctor didn't tell me much.

Also my TMJ doctor told me that I have arthritis just because I have grating sound. (Actually I don't know it is even grating sound. I sounds like some sticky things detaching from a surface... )

Is it true? Then why the mri didn't show the arthritis???

Please help me....
AND Please forgive my English...
This is my second language.. so, I am not that much fluent...

Thanks, in advance.

I think the presence of arthritis can be detected by the blood test panel indicated specifically for the arthritis.
It is autoimmune disease, so the markers in the blood should be present.
Without any evidence, I don't know how this doctor can tell you that you have arthritis.
I also have grating, clicking.. My blood test came back OK. It did not indicate arthritis,

Thank you..
Thanks for reply, edgaras.

Since everything is new to me, I have little bit of panic.
BUT...
I will be get used to all of these. Hmmm.

It is good to hear that you don't have arthritis even though you have grating sound..
I hope I am the same case as you...

I trust my DOC.
Everything will be fine, huh???

Have a beautiful day!!!

Jessica.

Hello, dyan.
Since last friday, I looked up almost every thread of this tmj forum.
How are you doing with the surgery?
I hope you feel a lot better.
And how is your vacation?

My dentist told me that my tmj doc is really famous guy. If I want to get the second opinion, I can do that, but there is going to be nobody who will oppose his opinion. That is what my dentist told me.

You know what?

I started soft diet on Monday.
Guess what?
I lost 3 lbs... Hurray!!!! for my hus...

I think I can lose tons of weight.. ^^;;

??
Dyan,
what does 'pm' mean?

BTW,
Soft diet means I should not use my jaw, right?
Then, I should grind everything and just gulp from the cup... right?
Hmmm...

If you let me know what 'pm' means, I will do 'pm'.

pm means private message. click on my user name or go to my profile there is a button there that says send her a message

soft diet doesnt mean not use your jaw---it means stay away from things that are hard to eat or are chewy--like bagles, pizza, steak etc(gum hard candy...) do more lik for meat eat chicken--mashed potatoes. boil vegies rather than steam. make it easy to chew--if you dont use your jaw muscles youwill loose them and you dont want that....just cause it hurts doesnt mean you dont use them and that will only make things worse. you should do some exercises with the jaw as well

thanks, dyan.
Wow, than I can eat some cheese and other cooked soft veggies, right?

OK...
But how about when I hear some grating sound?
I didn't see arthritis specialist yet but my tmj doc told me that I have jaw arthritis.

It hurt bad...
I am taking diclofenac sod 75 mg which my MD gave it to me.
I dont' think it works for me cause it hurt more and more everyday.

If I have arthritis, I don't think I should not move my jaw.
Am I correct?

no if you have arthritis you need to move it----yeah you can eat cheese etc--as long as it doesnt hurt----the more movement that you gert the better

you should perhaps take some glucosamine and msn for the joints it will help with the arthritis. not moving your jaw is never an option. it will only make things worse.

Dyan,
Then is there any exercise for the jaw arthritis?
I don't know where to start.
Whenever I swallow saliva, I hear grating sound and feel pain.

I will definately take some gluecosamine and msn--suppose it is magnesium.. right?.

Today, I have some thoughts...
I will worry about my tmj after 1 year.
My doc told me it will take 1 year to be healed.
So, I will just wait rather than worrying to die...

Everything will be fine.
I will just enjoy my life with my two beautiful girls...

Dyan, thanks again for all the warm replies.

you can't really die from this, but you can, if you worry yourself too much, like I do - it's like a cycle, pain>anxiety>muscle tension>more pain.

Who is doing an x-ray and why would they do x-ray - maybe you mean CT scan? MRI would be better, I think.
Usually for TMJ they use MRI scans to see soft tissues too. I really hope it's not just a simple x-ray, and that they do MRI, I think you deserve that given the symptoms, be really annoying and be angry and you see those doctors and they have listening problems from hearing all other patients complain Smile
Let us know how it goes and request a copy of results!

Good luck,

Ed
