Q: Mononucleosis false positive test
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 3rd, 2009
Child has developed trunk to knee hive looking rash that is extremely itchy, ER doctor told me that this was unlikely to happen even with antibiotic use. Day one of taking medication 3 times, the swab for strep has not come back positive, the ER doctor informed me that the test for mono could be a false positive. Is this possible? I am confused as I remember having Mono as a teenager and going through extreme pain from rash and antibiotics.

Mononucleosis Answer A6239

Rush, especially if the patient has taken antibiotics, like ampicillin or amoxicillin is a classic symptom for mononucleosis. Other symptoms include: sore throat, high fever, enlarged lymph nodes, muscle ache, headache. Enlarged spleen might also be found.
Atypical lymphocytosis, elevated Ebstein-Barr titers are expected results from diagnostic tests in mononucleosis.
Since it is caused by a virus, there is no specific treatment. Bed rest, fever control and pain control are usually the only measures that can be done.
